MARCIN BERDYSZAK & ZAFOS XAGORARIS
ART IDENTITY

30 March-26 April 2009

The deckchairs arranged in exhibition halls on which you can sit down and then listen to sounds from remote areas of the world constitute one of the three installations making up the joint exhibition of Marcin Berdyszak and Zafos Xagoraris to be held at the National Museum in Wrocław. It will be one of the rare opportunities to see works by the artists on display in museum interiors, which they try to avoid.

These two artists, who were born in different countries, share a similar attitude to modern culture and art. In his installations, structures and sculptures, Marcin Berdyszak diagnoses and comments on modern culture. His works are filled with quotations from reality, which when transposed to the world of art take on new meanings and significance. At the National Museum in Wrocław the artist will show, for instance, an installation called ‘The Tools of Culture’. In a sterile, white room we will see an arrangement of high-culture objects, such as paintings, music stands or mock violins. Objects covered with white fabric will form something that could be referred to as a ‘culture cover’. The cover is a shroud but also a paper napkin used to conceal something that no longer can be hidden: the disintegration of the culture of the western world – explains Elżbieta Kościelak, a co-organiser of the event.
Zafos Xagoraris will present two installations. The first one, called ‘Remote Sounds’, will be made up by deckchairs, speakers and CD players placed in a museum environment. The speakers will play sounds from remote areas of the world, which will mix with the local sounds (the voices and footsteps of the visitors and the street noise penetrating from behind the windows). The visitors can stop, lie on the deckchairs and, taking advantage of the sounds from the speakers, go on a trip to other parts of the world, to other cultures. The visitors will experience a physical and mental mixing of different worlds; the museum halls will be home to a world that does not really exist and yet can be sensually sampled.
The artist presented the ‘Remote Sounds’ project at the 27th São Paulo Art Biennial, as well as at three ports – Pireus (Greece), Bristol (UK) and Istanbul (Turkey).
Specially for the Wrocław exhibition Xagoraris has prepared an action called ‘To the Rescue of Things’ that as part of the state system of culture are destined for removal from the system and recycling: worn-out office furniture and, in exceptional circumstances, works of art (e.g. accidentally broken ceramic ware). The artist will present some museum objects whose lifetime has expired and will prolong their existence for the short duration of the event. He will also show the related documents, such as copies of entries from registers, proofs of taking the objects into stock and releasing them, and ministerial approvals of withdrawal of a work of art. In this way some documents associated with state procedures and the procedures themselves turn into art.

Marcin Berdyszak – born in 1964. Graduated from the State University of Fine Arts in Poznań; acquired a diploma in painting and sculpture studied under prof. W. Dudkowiak and prof. M. Szańkowski. Since 1989 on the staff of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. Participated in numerous exhibitions both at home and abroad. Son of Jan Berdyszak, an eminent representative of Polish post-war avant-garde art.
Zafos Xagoraris – born in 1963. Studied architecture at the State University of Technology in Athens and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens. Since 1986 one of the artists and architects publishing an experimental periodical entitled ‘The Black Museum’. Participated in numerous exhibitions in Greece and elsewhere. Son of Bija Davou, an eminent artist and a representative of the 1960s Greek avant-garde movement, and of Pantelis Xagoraris, a professor of mathematics and an artist devoted to geometric abstraction, New Bauhaus and Neo-Constructivism.
Galeria Kościelak – an art gallery owned by Ms Elżbieta Kościelak, established in 2003; specializes in experimental art and in the 1960s and 1970s avant-garde originating, among other things, from Conceptualism and geometric abstraction.
