FLASH ART OCTOBER ISSUE
October means art fairs, and Flash Art has collaborated with opinionated international art advisors and curators to offer their readings and shed light on the exchanges and conversations of the moment:
In INSIDE THE MARKET, Flash Art has asked a broad selection of art advisors, including STEFA NO BASILICO, TODD LEVIN and ALLAN SCHWARTZMAN amongst others, to speak about their experience of art fairs, what they would like to change about them, and also if and how one year of economic downturn has somehow affected the art advisory profession.
IWONA BLAZWICK, MASSIMILIANO GIONI, WHW, PAUL SCHIMMEL, MAURIZIO CATTELAN, are amongst more than one hundred curators, museum directors and critics who have answered Flash Art’s worldwide survey to compile the 100 MOST PROMISING EMERGING ARTISTS< /span>.
Celebrating the latest Venice Biennale is a review by MICHELE ROBECCHI; a Biennial Manifesto conceived by longstanding biennial aficionado HANS ULRICH OBRIST and a personal text by musician, performer and producer ARTO LINDSAY.
Maurizio Cattelan’s continued collaboration with Flash Art sees the artist interview HERNAN BAS, who celebrates his New York debut and his project at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, while VICTOR MAN reveals keynotes about his practice in a conversation with Neville Wakefield.
Coinciding with Art TLV 09 Tel Aviv International Art Biennial, FOCUS ISRAEL offers an overview of the international Israeli art scene, with Yael Bergstein on the work of MICHAL HELFMAN and a roundtable discussion with dispersed Israeli artists OHAD MEROMI from New York, ELAD LASSRY from Los Angeles, DANIEL SILVER from London and YAEL BARTANA between Amsterdam, Warsaw and Tel Aviv, with full-page interludes by GUY BEN-NER, OMER FAST and MIKA ROTTENBERG, who have conceived special projects for Flash Art.
Klaus Biesenbach talks to Slovakian artist ROMAN ONDÁK about his work, particularly Measuring the Universe — recently performed at MoMA New York —, and Loop, his installat ion for the Czech and Slovak pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Discovering a treasure of Italian history is Joao Ribas’s text “Sex at the Speed of Architecture,” a homage to the figure of Carlo Mollino.
Ellen Mara De Wachter discusses the filmic world of Scottish artist LUKE FOWLER, wi nner of the inaugural Jarman Award for artist filmmakers in 2008, while for the magazine’s Ouverture, London-based curator Adam Carr introduces the practice of Spanish-born Berlin and London-based artist SIMON FUJIWARA, whose displays and performances mix storytelling, sexuality and architecture.
The extraordinary collaborative piece PICTURES REFRAMED by South African artist Robin Rhode and Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes &nda sh; performed in June at the Risor Chamber Music Festival in Norway and starting its worldwide tour in New York in November – is discussed by Michele Robecchi in Flash Art’s Spotlight. Among the most spectacular pieces at the last Venice Biennale, AES+F’s The Feast of Trimalchio is Flash Art’s Global Art, with a text by Javier Panera.
Flash Art’s News section takes a closer look at Greece, with a review of the 2nd Athens Biennial and Matthew Barney and Elizabeth Peyton’s new performance, Blood of Two, on the island of Hydra. Also reviewed is 5th edition of Momentum, the Nordic Biennial in Moss, and artist collective Superflex tell us more about their new film created for this year’s Frieze Art Fair.
