Flash Art International November-December issue
Flash Art International November-December issue has dedicated the whole “News” section to biennials worldwide — from Istanbul by Power Ekroth to Lyon by Françoise Aubart, from Moscow by Yulia Tikhonova to Contour: The 4th Biennial of Moving Image in Mechelen, Belgium, by Elena Sorokina. Also featured Matt Price’s in-depth look into the flourishing art scene of England’s ‘second’ city, Birmingham.
Bucharest National Museum of Contemporary Art’s curator Magda Radu will talk to Cluj’s rising star ADRIAN GHENIE about his work and collaboration with Ciprian MureΕan, his references and his obscure imagery dominated by Dadaism, Duchamp, Lenin, Hitler and Goring.
At the heart of the issue is a tribute to MARCEL BROODTHAERS, an artist who “left behind poems, objects, paintings, books, but much more in the form of a living heritage.” These words, part of Barry Barker’s contribution text, explain the spirit behind Flash Art’s invitation to artists Jota Castro, Ann Craven, Renée Green, Christian Philipp Müller, Seth Price to respond to the work of Broodthaers with their own contributions.
Peruvian artist Jot a Castro is also one of the artists to have elected Broodthaers’s city of birth, Brussels, as his own, with other artists like Aglaia Konrad, Lucy McKenzie, Willem Oorebeek, Marie José Burki, Dora García, Pierre Bismuth, Kendell Geers, and Gabriel Kuri. In “Brussels Residents,” Contour Curator Katerina Gregos takes a look into the city’s welcoming, vibrant — and still resistant to hype and marketing — art scene.
Chris Sharp profiles the work of Greek artist ATHANASIOS ARGIANAS and gets to grips with the strange appeal of his recent sculptures. Born in Athens in 1976, Argianas studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Greek Arte Povera master Jannis Kounellis and successively at Goldsmiths College in London, where the artist is currently based.
RoseLee Goldberg, Director of Performa, New York’s biennial dedicated to performance, interviews Korean participant YEONDOO JUNG about his movement from film to performance and his homage to French Filmmaker, ‘cinema magician,’ G eorge Méliès.
With November, Flash Art inaugurates “BRAND NEW”, where a series of short and fresh interviews bring to our readers the latest news from international artists, interviewed by curators and writers close to them. To start out, Samuele Meni n talks to David Renggli and Michael Polsinelli to Adam Leech; Edit JeΕábková interviews Eva Kotatkova, while Simon Castets Ariel Schlesinger; Hanne Mugaas has Ida Ekblad answer the “Proust Questionnaire,” and Andris Brinkmanis talks to Janis Avotins. Salvatore Lacagnina interviews Fabian Marti, Marco Antonini Shana Moulton, and Neringa ΔerniauskaitΔ Zilvinas Kempinas.
For this issue’s Global Art, Michael Polsinelli discusses the tragicomedies of David Bestué and Marc Vives, who featured in this year’s Veni ce Biennale, and Ellen Mara De Wachter extensively reviews Tate Modern’s fall exhibition: “Pop Life: Art in a Material World,” co-curated by Jack Bankowsky, Alison M. Gingeras, and Catherine Wood.
