‘The Cross of Ideology’
15—28 January 2010
Evi Photopoulos’s oil paintings in the series entitled ‘The Cross of Ideology’ are a continuation of and a departure from the traditions of Byzantine art. Her love of intense deep colours and the effects she achieves with metallic accents hark back to the mysterious interiors of Byzantine churches as do her allusions to religious iconography.
She, however, evokes images in a contemporary way. Through her powerful paintings, Evi, as a young woman, wants to convey her concerns about the position of women, the significance of religious observances and the despoliation of the environment. She sums up her approach as follows:
“The enemy of every ideology, every religion and faith is truth,
the truth which is inside us and waits to be freed.”
Evi’s three years studying Byzantine icons have bad a strong influence on her work, as have the four years she worked in textile and clothing design in Milan. Her formal art schooling took place over seven years in Athens.
Evi exhibits primarily in Greece and Crete and she is looking forward to her first show in Britain. A recent exhibition focused on environmental issues was visited by 20,000 people in Heraklion, Crete, and later this year she is showing more works on the environment in museums in Athens and Crete. Her paintings are held internationally in private collections. In addition to being a painter, Evi is an author and illustrator.
